For civil purposes, the institution of marriage exists for raising children, at least in large part. It is possible to become legally obligated to simultaneously support children from several marriages: for example, payments of child support after a divorce. For civil purposes, this is equivalent to polygamy, and most people are vehemently in support of maintaining this form of polygamy, that is, keep requiring child support after a divorce.
