[jmnuszop] Red Sox elimination from postseason

Thursday, August 30, 2012: Boston Red Sox versus Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, at Angel Stadium of Anaheim, Anaheim, California.  Game start 7:05 PM PDT.  Bottom of 3rd inning, Angels ahead 2-1.  1 out, men on 1st and 2nd.  Jon Lester pitching for Boston, 2-2 pitch - Mark Trumbo singles to left, Torii Hunter scores.

This third run was the decisive run in a game that ended 5-2.  The loss dropped the Red Sox record to 62-70, eliminating them from the playoffs. To have made the wildcard required 69 losses or fewer.  Texas and Baltimore finished the season 93-69.

Technically, this was not mathematical elimination.  Had the Sox won this game and won every game afterwards in an unreal 30-game winning streak, they would have altered the playoff picture in the process, handing losses instead of wins to other playoff contenders (e.g., Baltimore, New York, Oakland).

Minnesota: Sun, Aug 19 3rd inning.  Houston: Tue, Aug 7 12th inning.

2003 Detroit: one of the worst seasons in baseball, ending with 119 losses.  Fri, Jul 18, 2003 8th inning.
