Write down the moves in a chess game. Next, perhaps in different colors, draw paths indicating the journey of each piece through the move list, until capture or end of game. Apply some graph layout algorithms to avoid spaghetti.
That piece that became critically useful at a certain point in the game: when did it arrive at its useful location? Perhaps the greater the skill level, the more long ago in the past the piece arrived, reflecting long-term strategy when placing it.
Reversible Algebraic Notation might be useful.
This is in contrast to a previous idea depicting each piece's journey around the board.
