The world has not quite realized (implemented into reality) the power of open source software and cloud computing.
Instead of having to rely on a big service provider to compute something computationally expensive for you, you can do it yourself on ten thousand cloud servers rented by the millisecond, so you get an answer not adulterated by a third party outside of your control.
For example, consider Google. It runs proprietary trade-secret software on its server farms. You want to search for something. But Google is not directly interested in returning to you the most relevant result: it serves you the result that maximizes their advertising revenue, because that's their bottom line.
Open-source software prevents such behavoir.
Big computation often uses big data, so we need to remove copyright restrictions on noncommercial copying.
Many enemies: lots of current companies' business models will lose money. But the battle retains a similar flavor to Microsoft trying to kill off Linux.
