Whether the basketball goes through the hoop sometimes depends on how much of the ball's energy is absorbed by the rim. How can you measure this? Check that it is the same on both ends of the court, and among all hoops in all arenas.
If one end is more forgiving than the other, then the team which has the forgiving side in the second half (shooters' arms and bodies have begun to tire) will have the advantage. If courts among the league are different, home teams with more or less inside scoring (less precision required) can work it to their advantage.
