The standard calculation of escape velocity assumes the earth is alone in the universe. What is the true "escape velocity" of the earth, with which a projectile won't return? It is probably just enough energy to get to the point where the Moon's gravity is stronger than the Earth's.
What is the escape velocity of the Earth-Moon system? We can probably cheat by using gravitational slingshots, for example the IPTN from the Lagrange points.
