[wjhfcmvn] Conveniently turning off your house

Provide a switch, right inside the entrances to your house, by which you can conveniently turn off the entire electric power to your house in order to save energy, say, as you exit the house (and conveniently turn back on when you reënter).

What changes do we need on appliances?  Devices with clocks, e.g., the VCR need an internal battery or capacitor.  Refrigerators and freezers should be well sealed (this is a good idea in general) and also need probably a large battery.  A well-insulated refrigerator should maintain cold for a while if no one is opening the door.  Gas appliances with electric starters need to fail off if no electricity.

Home security systems, exterior front door light, laptops left plugged in but in sleep mode, devices which you expect to be recharged when you get back,…

A less drastic device is an easy to access display which tells you how much energy you've used.  (The electric company does not want you to be closely monitoring this number, and these days make it pretty difficult for you to know.)
