Many of the sailors on Sir John Franklin's failed expedition through the Northwest Passage apparently died of scurvy, despite them packing with them lots of lime juice. The TV tells me this is because vitamin C has a shelf life and degrades (even in the Arctic cold!).
This makes me suspicious of long shelf life products claiming to supply vitamin C, for example orange juice 016300150338, which has an expiration date 10 months into the future.
