Attempts to make an alphabet simpler deprives words of their etymological, as well as other, meaning, hidden in the weird spellings. For example, replacing "ph" with "f" removes the Greek origin, potentially causing ambiguity (collision) between the "f" and (formerly) "ph" versions of the word. Korean suffers from this, where they still need to occasionally use Chinese characters to disambiguate words (usually names) with the same pronunciation.
Huffman, aithmetic, etc. coding is instead the way.
