waves ripple across the surface of the water: "nice."  the waves continue rippling on the solid container of the water: "something is very wrong."

...because there's no way that the material characteristics of water match the material characteristics of the container (beach, swimming pool deck) to cause the same wave speed.  there should be refraction!
