Original game: placement anywhere, movement permitted in any orthogonal direction and along diagonal lines only through the center. First player wins (supposedly fairly easily) by playing in the center.
Variation 1: Same as Original except first move cannot be center. This avoids the fairly easy win for first player in the original game.
Variation 2: Same as Original except no diagonal movement permitted at all, and win (mill) cannot be diagonal either.
Both variations from http://www.cyningstan.com/game/106/three-mens-morris .
More variations: in the movement phase, pieces can do any chess king move. Or fly to any unoccupied square. Does the first player win these easily?
