[smhilorz] The joys of rain in BOTW

In Zelda BOTW, rain causes climbing to be difficult, and (adding insult to injury) makes it hard to find a dry spot to make a campfire to wait out the rain.  One also cannot create updrafts with fire, which otherwise would be an alternative way of going up.

Despite first appearances, productive climbing in the rain is possible because (if you do it just right, see elsewhere for instructions) the jump distance is more than the slide down distance.  However, this takes a lot of time and stamina so is not fun.

However, rain does offer the following benefits:

Shock weapons cause a spherical Area of Effect (AoE) when the ground is wet, allowing hurting many enemies at once, or not requiring precise aiming with shock arrows.  (In the absence of rain, a frozen enemy or struck chuchu jelly can induce an AoE.)

Metal items (either giving them to enemies, or dropping them nearby) can attract lightning, which will damage enemies.  It would have been nice if this kind of lightning damage to enemies were much higher, perhaps enough to one-shot any foe, as it is tricky to set up.  (But Hinox and Lynel always have metal weapons.)

Rain extinguishes the fire of fire keese and eventually kills them.  Also kills fire chuchus.

Rain muffles sound, increasing stealth.

Rain gives Link immunity to fire attacks.

Shield surfing speed increases, and damage to shield decreases (not confirmed).

Most traveling vendors have lower prices or better items when it is raining.  Of particular interest is Teli, who sells Ancient Cores when it is raining.  Depending on the weather, Teli also sells all other guardian parts except for Giant Ancient Core.  More details in 2 versions of the same document by HylianAngel:

(It would be nice if the document were formatted so that the differences due to rain are more apparent.)

Thunderwing butterfly, electric darner, and hot-footed frog appear.  But there are no plants that only appear when it rains, despite what the "Joys of Rain" loading-screen hint says.

Water octoroks float above the water, making them easy targets.

Pools of water form on which one can use cryonis.  Flipping decayed guardians with cryonis (or pushing them with something large and metal with magnesis) yields more parts.

Bomb arrows can be farmed from enemy archers.  The famous spot is east of Gut Check Rock, north of Skull Lake.  Another spot is Shadow Pass, north of South Akkala Stable.  For other locations, search "bomb arrow" at https://mrcheeze.github.io/botw-object-map/.

Rainbows happen.  They are pretty.

If you dislike rain, certain regions never rain: Gerudo Desert, Eldin, Hebra, Korok Forest, Hyrule Castle interior, shrine interiors (but you can't climb inside shrines either).  Maybe Thyphlo Ruins.  Others?

DLC Travel Medallion eases some of the annoyance of rain.  Set the medallion down where stymied by rain, fast travel somewhere else and do something else for a while (maybe sleep or wait by a fire), then fast travel back, hoping the weather has changed.

Revali's Gale also eases the annoyance of rain, providing an alternative to climbing as a way of going up.

Places where it is always raining:

  • Zora's Domain prior to completing Vah Ruta.
  • Thundra Plateau prior to completing Trial of Thunder shrine quest (Toh Yasa shrine).  When raining, this area is very good for collecting rain critters.
  • Calora Lake prior to completing Song of Storms shrine quest (Qukah Nata shrine).
  • Others?
