Variation on blindfold chess: Instead of a board, the player sees only the coordinates of each piece remaining on the board.
The display could be organized in a nice 8x8 table with current coordinates written where the pieces' original positions were. And having a 8x8 grid to stare at is useful.
Or, as a scoreboard for spectators, augment a standard board diagram with a table giving positions of each piece, maybe two rows above and below the board. It's easy to compare who has what material.
