[lhbibwxj] Build your own hard drive

Build a functioning magnetic storage device from scratch (maybe a kit).  The idea is to do magnetic storage in a way that is completely documented and well understood, at least by you.  This is in contrast to current commercial hard drives, which have inaccessible firmware running on the circuit board of the hard drive itself, so recovering the data from just the pattern of magnetization on the platters is close to impossible.

Magnetic storage has the potential of lasting a very long time, but only if the metadata about how information is encoded in the magnetization is also preserved.
