The Old Testament is about customs of tribes, tribes defining their identity (often through military victories and losses).
Malcolm X spoke of black identity, and using that identity as a foundation for political strength.
The New Testament is about breaking down the tribal barriers and uniting around broader concepts like compassion.
Martin Luther King, Jr., a Christian minister by training, spoke of people of different races united as brothers and sisters.
The debate between them is very, very old.
