Business model, step 1. Gain subscribers, followers, readers, access, etc., by any means possible, perhaps even by doing good. 2. Monetize the trust and influence by selling it off to the highest bidder.
The highest bidder is pretty much guaranteed to be someone seeking to manipulate, deceive, and defraud. The highest bidder might be yourself.
The cycle continues: people learn to no longer trust the thing previously believed trustworthy, so newcomers appear to fill the vacuum.
Does the world have to work this way?
Humans lack the intellectual capacity to constantly evaluate from first principles whether something is good or not, even if the information is available. Therefore, they place their trust about such evaluations in other people or entities. Computers may have or soon have the desired kind of intellectual capacity.
