The basic shape of game controllers, disregarding radical experiments by Nintendo, has not changed much in many years, suggesting it might be a near optimal shape for a handheld input device.
The thumbs do most of the work, plus a few "shoulder" buttons for the other fingers. Even the radical Wii controllers follow this pattern.
They are obviously very different in shape from a typical keyboard, having fewer total buttons, but people may be able to learn to type on a controller with fewer buttons with combinations or chords.
