When learning computer programming, avoid as much as possible writing programs that deal with the real world, e.g., real world data, real world users, even real world network and operating system interactions.
The real world is messy and will only lead to frustration and rage-quitting in the beginner programmer.
Mathematics is nicely not real world: everything is neat and clear. Calculate the Mandelbrot set. Simulate Conway's Game of Life.
