Fragile and breakable things -- especially when a durable equally functional alternative exists -- are markers of higher social class, because only they can afford to replace them.
Our notion that those fragile and breakable things are more beautiful shows just how deeply markers of social class are ingrained into our unconscious psychology. What is beautiful? What is enjoyable?
Inspired by the death of Charmayne Maxwell by a fall onto a wine glass. But drinking wine out of anything else just isn't classy -- there's that word again.
