Let an identifier in a programming language simultaneously have as many as three names: a long name that usefully says what it is or does, a short name that is easy to type, and an even shorter display rendering perhaps using Unicode or a graphical character or color.
Inspired by return.
Some difficult UI challenges for the IDE, including the seemingly impossible task of wanting simultaneously to see the useful long name but display the short name to conserve screen area and keep code concise: perhaps horizontally scroll the long name in a horizontally short viewport. Even harder might be how to edit.
