In the event that go 囲碁 begins to suffer death by opening theory, one could randomize the first few moves, though doing it right seems nontrivial.

Would cake-cutting work?  The first player proposes an opening position and the second player chooses which side to play.  This probably gives too much advantage to the first player who will have studied both sides of the opening position.  It will probably fail disastrously in chess.

Perhaps a random opening position and the players bid on komi.
