A missed opportunity in The Avengers movie: Loki needs some iridium so steals the international prototype kilogram which is made out of platinum-iridium alloy. And maybe all the copies, too. (100 g of iridium per copy.) They are well guarded, allowing for a dramatic heist.
(And earth is left without a standard kilogram.)
