Cut a chess board into 4 square quarters and stack them into four layers (in some order), creating something vaguely like Star Trek 3D chess. However, the rules of chess remain the same, just played awkwardly on a broken board. The point is the sculptural challenge of constructing such a four-layer board artistically elegantly.
Instead of stacking the quarters directly on top of each other, shift each layer slightly in the direction of its corner to serve as a mnemonic. Alternatively, the layers are stacked straight vertically, but the two outer edges of each layer are extended and annotated with rank numbers or file letters.
I think a good stacking order is a1 h1 h8 a8, keeping the kingside layers near each other because of the tendency of slightly more action along those files.
Previously, noting that 8*8 = 4*4*4, so other interesting (dis)orientations are possible.
