Construct a star out of hydrogen gas. Keep adding more hydrogen. Does the radiation pressure from fusion always balance gravity (while there remains hydrogen)? Or, with sufficient mass, can a ball of only hydrogen directly undergo core collapse? Maybe this was possible in the early universe.

What if you start with some other element? Do all elements lighter than iron essentially act the same as hydrogen?
