[mcqekcmi] Close packed circles within close packed spheres

Consider the hexagonal close packing and face centered cubic packing of identical spheres.  In each packing, there exist families of parallel planes on which the cross section of the intersecting spheres form a hexagonal close packing of circles on the plane.  How many families of planes exist for each sphere packing? I suspect the fcc packing has more.
