The Puritans, religious extremists who would make the Taliban look hedonist in comparison, settled Boston. How did they tolerate, both philosophically and politically, the tremendous amount of prostitution that is documented to have existed due to Boston's nature as a port city frequented by sailors?
I'm guessing it would have been well within their political power to crack down on it more severely.
Ironically, prostitution and other sex work seems to have been more tolerated in Puritan times than now. Are we making progress?
