How did the isthmus of Panama form? Assuming North and South America were previously separated, in the last moments (in geologic time, probably millennia) before they joined, there would have been tremendous high speed flow between the two oceans, the constriction of an already existing ocean current. This flow should have been strong enough to erode away any slowly moving land.
Inspired by Cosmos, which says the cutting of that ocean current radically changed climate in Africa, inducing human evolution.
