I don't think a product manufacturer loses much in publishing the exact specifications of the components of their product.
It allows the product to be repaired independently with rapid prototyping technologies. However, such technologies are expensive, so they don't compete directly with the product. Popular replacement parts can be cheaply mass produced and sold by the manufacturer so 3D printing will not compete against such parts either. Patent protections also still remain.
In particular, the assurance that the product can (for a price) always be repaired even if the original manufacturer stops supporting it may induce consumers to buy the product over a competitor who does not release specifications.
