Complement various forces making simulated terrain not flat with opposite forces restoring flatness. (Or sphere if modeling a planet.)
The heat equation is the obvious first choice. However, if time is allowed to advance linearly, then I think the equation works too quickly in destroying the (beautiful) fine details of a drastic shape change, then works too slowly to remove the macroscopic effects such as the depression of a large crater. Need bullet-time.
