Do you have a phobia (revulsion, irrational discomfort) of the idea of being the sole breadwinner of your (future) family?
I strongly suspect men and women will tend to answer the question differently. The original motivation is to determine the extent to which girls and women have deeply internalized "marrying rich" as a life goal, or hope.
Such internalized beliefs may affect education and career choices, ultimately contributing to the disparity of men and women in higher paying jobs. We particularly focus on the "phobia" aspect to try to tease apart cause and effect. If a woman pins her hopes on "marrying rich" simply because of the lack of high paying jobs for women, then that part of the thinking is merely rational. We are interested whether there is an irrational phobia beyond the rational thinking.
If there is a phobia, what caused it?
Question along similar lines: do you believe deadbeat dads deserve greater stigma than deadbeat moms? Your answer reveals your internalized beliefs.
