Here are a set of pieces which can be used both for chess and shogi.
Main design is pentagonal tiles as in shogi, with no distinction between colors except white and black king.
Instead of kanji characters, we use piece figurines on the front faces of most pieces: 1 black king, 1 white king, 4 each of queens, bishops, knights, and rooks, 18 pawns.
2 each of hisha and kakugyo, labeled in kanji. These are not used for chess.
For shogi, use Queen for Gold, Bishop for Silver, and Rook for Lance. This is different from the common Western convention to call Hisha a Rook and Kakugyo a Bishop. The promoted reverse sides are labeled in Japanese characters as is normal for shogi because the promoted sides are not expected to be used in chess (use the extra queen instead).
The set allows easy play of crazyhouse.
