A (literally) straightforward method to achieve an accelerating moving sidewalk is a series of sidewalks each faster than the previous.
How do we get people not to trip at the transition?
The sidewalks could be next to each other, so you step sideways on to the next. But what of people who fail to do that? (For fun, they get dumped into a pool. The pool needs a current to avoid people from landing on top of each other.)
Could be used for escalators, too.

I vaguely recall reading some Larry Niven story long ago which had sidewalks which were faster and faster the further you stepped to one side, like successively faster lanes on the left in a highway.
