Survivors of rape report that the feeling of not being in control, having the control taken away from them, is very psychologically painful with lasting psychologically harmful effects.
What causes a person to expect to be in control, and to attach such a strong importance to it?
Inculcating an expectation of control helps enforce social barriers of who is permitted to have sex with whom: simply program a person to prefer to have sex with only one side of the barrier, and the individual responsibility -- the expectation of control -- of achieving those preferences maintains the social separation.
Do people with less expectation of control suffer less psychological damage from rape? Can education change a person's expectation of control to decrease harm?
The expectation of control about sex seems a dangerous notion, given that the mating instinct is an ancient and extremely powerful force of nature, akin to a hurricane or earthquake.
