Our society nowadays regards with very high esteem creators of art, but not creators of computer programs. Most people have no idea who authored the computer programs they use, and that mindset is not thought of as disrespectful.
This is part of a continuing series trying to describe the way people thought, or actually didn't think, about intellectual property in the era before copyright.
