The ignorance most Americans have about Al Qaeda's three published very specific reasons for the September 11th attacks reminds me of the "perception filter" from Dr. Who (e.g., "The Sound of Drums"). Instead of asking "why?" about an event as huge and important as 9/11, they simply assume, wrongly, it was an attack against American ideals and the American way of life. The brain has been convinced not to pay attention to information in plain sight.
What other real-life perception filters are in place?
