[rmbumyui] Maintaining political parties

Assuming political parties are bad for the country (gridlock, Washington's Farewell Address), examine the underlying mechanisms by which they exist and remain stable for decades if not centuries.

Credible trust relationships: "You scratch my back; I'll scratch yours."  Can this game theoretic feature be broken?  Perhaps very short term limits (but that could be bad), or only a small random sampling of legislators permitted to participate on a given piece of legislation.
