The instinct of a carnivorous species not to eat its own children, or not to eat a mate before mating, must be fairly tricky, needing to override the common instinct to feed, especially given most organisms tend to live just on the edge of starvation (by Malthus).

But exceptions of what to eat allows mimicry (powered by evolution) by the prey to avoid predation.
