Encountered a situation where the BIOS thinks a USB stick plugged into a computer is a hard drive, so refuses to display it as a USB choice on the boot menu. However a workaround is to have the stick plugged in, go to BIOS setup (hit Del) Advanced Configuration, and reorder the preferred boot order of hard drives.
It might have been the case that the USB stick shows up among the hard drives in the boot menu; I haven't looked.
