[darcepos] Simpler chess

No castling
No en passant
Play until king capture, so most stalemates become losses.
No 50 move rule

Motivation is a simpler game to learn and to teach a computer to play.

Could simplify the pawn: perhaps a ferz.  No promotion or special first move or capturing differently than movement.  Piece is isotropic.

Eliminating the Chess960 constraint of king between rooks for castling, there are 2880 opening positions.  Still want bishops on opposite colors.

Simpler castling, instead of eliminating it:

  • No restrictions of castling through or while in check
  • It's OK to castle even if the king or rook has moved, so long as they have returned to their initial positions.
  • Or an even looser restriction, especially for Chess960: king just has to be on the back rank and have a clear path to the castling destination, and have an own rook on the desired side.
