What would be the intellectual equivalent of hiking the Appalachian Trail, several months of all-day effort, but essentially recreational and fun? One wants a constant feeling of progress.
Working through the exercises of a (well-written) textbook? A puzzle with a very large number of parts?
Perhaps there is no equivalent, as the what makes hiking fulfilling is your mind is cleared while doing a simple physical task, allowing it to wander and think new thoughts. An intellectual pursuit would interfere with that.
