[uiukccad] Income inequality and blizzard subway shutdown

The underground portions of the Boston subway (MBTA) did not shutdown during the Blizzard of 1978:  http://davis-square.livejournal.com/3105499.html

During this recent blizzard, the subway shut down for 2 days.  The reason is because it now snows especially hard inside underground subway tunnels.  Just kidding.

The reason this time is because MBTA employees, for example, train conductors, could not get to work.

We've had a significant change in geographic demographics since 1978 such that a typical worker on a T salary now cannot afford to live on a T subway line.  They have to drive to work, or take the bus.

Social inequality affects us all.  Income inequality.  Lack of low-income housing.  In 1978 there was rent control.

(Though the reason for the extended outage was 'Restoration of the bus, trolley and subway system would not take place before Monday, the MBTA said Sunday. "A communications tower in Quincy is down, which makes train service impossible," said Richard Davey, Massachusetts Secretary of Transportation on Saturday. The tower is used to deliver instructions to the entire transit system.' WCVB) Also, boston.com has a longer story.
