Provide a method in DNS so that each domain can be queried for all the hosts and subdomains that exist underneath it.
This is a solution in search of a problem. Perhaps it solves peer discovery. Or, how can a new competitor to Google find all the sites to spider?
It is an optional method.
May choose to have your domain listed on some other directory, especially if the parent domain exercises the option not to implement the method.
A domain may delegate its directory listing to several other servers. (Probably necessary for the com TLD.)
