A dystopian future with a large percentage of the population addicted to drugs is a staple of science fiction (A Scanner Darkly, TekWar, Dune). Invert the trope and depict the same scenario as a utopia.
Technology supports a population much greater than the number required to work. The benefits of technology are aggressively redistributed, and those who do not need to work spend their time pursuing happiness, including recreational drugs, which are accepted as normal non-shameful behavior.
Perhaps some new drug technology that quickly and easily lets you stop taking drugs when necessary. Is there current real-world research in this direction?
