When considering 3D printing, remember also to consider a CNC milling machine as an alternative. There's an elegant duality between the two: putting material where there is air versus putting air where there is material.
There's still an incredible ways to go for sophistication of these machines. I imagine robotic manipulators of multiple parts and many different tools, e.g., welding, painting. Difficult planning problem to figure out how to make an arbitrary shape, more difficult than 3D printing. The holy grail might be for a mill to cut and assemble an exact copy of itself without any human assistance.
