One problem NASA will have to research and solve for a human mission to Mars is how to avoid sexual assault between crew members for a mission lasting months, years, or even the remainder of a lifetime for a one-way mission.
Given the kind of experiments that will need to be done, this might end up being more difficult than the rockets and control systems. Society might have to face some uneasy truths emerging from the research, such as what causes a person to become more likely to commit sexual assault (perhaps reasons outside of their control, so the attacker not at fault) and why some people suffer more harm (productivity loss) than others after assault (so victim has a role in reducing harm). Fear of those uneasy truths might cause political pressure to abandon such research, and ultimately not to go to Mars.
Previously alluded for science fiction writers.
Previous research for submarines?
