[bqnidpfd] Not maximizing happiness

People can be quite happy despite being deprived of many things, including liberties.  Therefore, justifying maximizing some other measure, for example, income or equivalently economic output, is a nontrivial argument.

We might try advocating for the vaguely defined "advancement of human civilization", asking people to sacrifice happiness in pursuit of this noble goal.
