The "like" button is merely a tiny first step. To really measure how much someone likes something, you must look at what they do with it: do they remix it, improve it, create a derivative work? How much effort do they put into their derivative work? Much more than the 0.5 seconds of clicking a "like" button (which itself is a very minor derivative work, much like republishing a book with a blurb of praise on the jacket.)
However, to accomplish this, we need weaker copyright, especially for derivative works.
The amount of derivative works could be connected to author compensation.
