Goal: take a photograph in a low-light environment without a visible flash.
Use an infrared flash. The camera gets some very dark pixels in the visible range which are amplified to figure out what color they are. It also gets lots of light in the infrared range (due to flash), and then machine learning, e.g., texture analysis, is used to map and interpolate the visible light colors. It's kind of a best guess false color.
