A brand which specializes in designer knockoffs, but always improving on the original design. For example, the original designer might do well on design, but poorly in manufacturing. They save money on the research and development of the design. "Product Foo is so good! But I'm going to wait until Bar makes comes out with their better version."
This brand hopefully accrues prestige.
It all depends on how much intellectual property protection there is; consumers win if protection is weak.
