Save Emacs unlimited undo history into Git (or some other VCS): Auto-save on steroids. There will definitely be branches: every undo is an abandoned branch.
Track the origin of cut and paste from other files in the repository.
There's a bit of an impedence mismatch, as well as a formidable UI problem.
